FAQs

Frequency of Services:

We are committed to providing therapy that improves communication outcomes. All children receiving speech-language intervention at SORO are seen twice a week for 30-45 minutes each session.

Where does therapy take place:

SORO started with in-home therapy services in 2021. To increase the accessibility of services to families in neighboring areas, we are now providing therapy in-person at our Annapolis office and virtually.

Working with you:

At SORO, we curate an individualized therapy experience. Each family working with us gains community and connection to resources. We build strong relationships with our families to support the therapy process.

To maintain our practice's individualized and community feel, SORO only accepts a limited number of families to work with. Our providers have strong wellness practices that increase their presence and capacity to facilitate therapy with energy and efficacy.

What sets SORO Apart?

SORO provides relationship-based language therapy services. We prioritize connection over compliance. We build connections between caregivers and their children to support communication outcomes. Therapists at SORO hold certifications in speech-language pathology and DIRFloortime.

My child has sensory differences. How does Soro help?

Our therapists at SORO undergo rigorous training to support their knowledge of the sensory system. Our clinicians know that behaviors are manifestations of sensory systems needing support. We modify the therapy space to improve a child’s comfort and regulation. We experiment with providing specific sensory input or scaffolding down. We have you covered.

What do Neurodiversity affirmative practices mean at SORO?

  • We allow a child’s strength and interests to guide us in therapy.

  • We support growth edges by leading with a child’s strengths.

  • We honor bodily autonomy and do not force or coerce children to engage in therapy activities that they’ve declined.

  • We focus on building a relationship and creating a safe space.

  • We don’t withhold positive experiences, desired items, or fun games to increase compliance.

  • We believe that people experience and interact with the world around them in different ways.

Do you accept insurance?

SORO Language Therapy Collaborative, LLC accepts private pay for services and is considered out-of-network with insurance providers. We provide our families using their out-of-network benefits with a medically coded receipt, called a superbill, for each session. Clients may submit superbills to their insurance providers for possible reimbursement of session fees.

Affording Therapy:

SORO maintains 4 sliding scale slots. These are reduced-rate therapy slots. Please inquire regarding the availability of sliding scale slots.

SORO also provides workshops and community activities that are free or low-cost to increase access to communication support.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity defines the idea that people experience and process the world differently. To be neurodiversity-affirming is to believe that differences are not deficits. We acknowledge that some differences require support if those differences impact a person's access or opportunities for connection.

A neurodiversity-affirming clinician creates environmental support to increase an individual's access. This clinician aims to lead with the child's interests and to cultivate a space where that child can be successful. The goal is to build a child's confidence and self-assurance in their skills as we guide them through development.

Why are you private pay?

At SORO, we provide an individualized therapy experience. Our clinicians are specialists in the field. We develop treatment plans based on the unique communication needs of each child.

We determine the frequency of intervention, factoring in what research says, best practices, and the communication profile of each child. Our interventions yield strong outcomes!

Our child-centered approach requires 1-1 interactions and close case management outside of sessions. We use our time to personalize your child's intervention. Time spent disputing insurance claims takes us away from the work that we love.

We develop treatment plans without the limitations of insurance companies, giving your child the number of sessions they need and the kind of therapy that will improve their outcomes.

What is DIRFLoortime?

“Floortime (also known as DIRFloortime®) is an intervention used to promote a child’s development. It uses the power of relationships and human connection to encourage the development of the capacities for self-regulation, engagement, communication, shared social problem-solving, and creative, organized, and reflective thinking and reasoning. This program was developed by Stanley Greenspan, MD, and his colleagues.”
